We are looking for creatives to help with the updating of existing infographics as well as the development of a new infographic to suppport our upcoming campaign to create more awareness on the need to restore degraded peatlands, a major source of haze in our region. Let us know if you will be interested. We are able to provide a small token to commission your work to support creatives in these difficult times.
PM Haze is a registered charity that is in the 'business' of finding people-focused solutions to haze. We run a local advocacy programme that encourages consumers to advocate for haze free palm oil in the food we eat. We also create awareness on the degradation of peatlands in Indonesia as one of the major causes of haze in our region. Our call to action for peatlands is to ask for people to support our restoration programme in Indonesia by adopting trees to be planted on degraded peatlands.
Some background on the issue:
What do you need to know?
Peatlands are natural wetlands that cover 3% of our earth. Partially decomposed plant matter from living plants falls to the forest floor, creating layers of peat over millennia. All the carbon from the plant matter is kept underwater, locking in the carbon. Peatlands contain three times more carbon than all the plants and trees in the world.
Why should you care?
When peatlands are damaged, fire risks increase, increasing haze risks in our region. Elevated haze conditions increase hospital admissions of individuals with pre-existing conditions. 1 in 5 children in Singapore has asthma. Preventing haze protects our children from the haze. Tropical peatlands in Southeast Asia are at risk of degradation. 70% of peatlands in SEA are located in Indonesia, where the haze in Singapore originates. For every hectare of peatlands we protect, we prevent the emissions of CO2 equivalent to driving 11,000 cars for a year. Preventing haze also protects our children and the communities in our region from this harmful air pollution.
What can we do?
Through the rehabilitation ofWe can prevent hazestop this by rehabilitating these damaged peatlands through the planting of native trees and building of canal blocks we help to retain peatlands in their natural state. A forest is made up of many individual trees. Each tree you adopt not only protects our peatlands, but also help secure a haze free future for all.
